Heritage Weekend 2010
|
St. Andrew’s Church Shottery celebrated Heritage Weekend to the theme “Bread of Life”. Visitors were welcomed to the Heritage Trail on Saturday afternoon. There was a lively interest in the bread making competition with 35 entries. Prof. Sam Millar of Campden BRI cast his professional eyes over the breads of which there were four categories and having judged and awarded prizes gave constructive and helpful criticisms to all concerned. Lindsey Gravestock was winner and runner up with her hand made white bread in the 10 and under age group. Vanesssa Gravestock was winner and runner up for her hand made white loaf and plait in the 10 to 18 years age group. Highly commended was Lauren Jayne Bradwell with her hand made white loaf in this same age group. Overall winner in the 18+ age group for machine made breads was Julie Milne with a 50/50 loaf and runner up was Betty Young with a brown loaf. Ginny Morris was highly commended for her ginger and marmalade bread. In the 18+ age group for hand made bread Brenda Whitbread won with her hot cross buns, with Gwenda Tucker coming second with her Bara Brith loaf. Highly commenced in this category were Laura Pring with an Italian bread and Sylvaine Gravestock with a turtle shaped white bread.
Prof Millar, who confessed to being passionate about breads, gave a fascinating insight into the history and science of bread making, handing out lots of tips and sound advice. The evening ended with supper and musical entertainment from the Robson family and the St. Andrew’s Recorder Group in the Parish Centre.
The theme continued at the 10am Eucharist on the Sunday with Bishop Christopher Cocksworth, Lord Bishop of Coventry, as celebrant and special preacher.
During the Service a presentation was made to Trevor Cox to mark his 50 years serving in the Ministry.
Pre lunch entertainment was provided by four flautists from the Junior Choir followed by some choral numbers by Members of the Junior Choir. Fellow Travellers completed the interlude by performing a little play around the “Feeding of the 5000”. The festivities ended with a delicious roast beef lunch which was provided by Ladies Fellowship. |
